Troy & Jude Check Out New Sports Trend 'Pickleball'

March 9, 2011. Surprise (Happy Trails) Troy Hayden and Jude LaCava are pretty athletic dudes, and they've played sports since they were kids. So when they heard about pickleball, a sport that's quickly becoming a phenomenon in some valley communities, they had to see what the fuss was about. NEW PICKLEBALL COURTS FOR SURPRISE

The 8 temporary Pickleball courts, near the Dream catcher Park and swimming pool in the city park area have been converted into 8 permanent Pickleball courts. The $25,000 required to do the conversion was provided by donations from over 300 players and businesses. Many of our Arizona Traditions players have contributed to the project.

There was a celebration event there on March 3rd with city officials, the Willow Canyon High School Band and lots of players from all over the area and even out-of-state visitors.

These beautiful new courts are lighted and are open for play from 6 a.m. To 10 p.m. daily.  The courts are free and open to the puboic.  These new courts will provide a place to play for our citizens who do not have courts as we do here in Arizona Traditions and in the other senior communities in the area.  They also provide a place to play for our own players who would like to play friends from other neighborhoods but can't find available times here in Traditions. Bring your paddles and have a great time.

Classes will be available there from time to time. Schedules will be available in the periodic Surprise flyers and at the Surprise Parks and Recreation Offices. Fees will likely be $10 from surprise residents and $20 for non-residents.

There is no charge for drop-in play. For information about using the courts if you have a group that would like to play you can contact the Surprise Pickleball Association by logging onto their web page at
www.surprisepickleball.org.

As with all other sports there will be a nominal charge for leagues, Ladders, tournaments, etc.
